Seeing no other way to win, Yusuke removes the spirit cuffs Genkai put on him. Yusuke gains the upper hand, but Toguro reveals his full potential.

Yusuke is overwhelmed. Toguro thinks of a horrific way he can make Yusuke more powerful in order to fulfil his desire to fight someone at his level. A new power emerges from within Yusuke after the tragedy. Channeling the anger he feels toward himself and Toguro, Yusuke fights with all his might. The Dark Tournament comes to an end. Koenma and Sakyo settle their bet; the loser tries to destroy the dome along with his own life. Koenma returns to the Spirit World and holds a meeting with Toguro to determine his punishment, but Toguro has already made up his own mind.

As the Dark Tournament comes to a dramatic end, Yusuke must now stop a former Spirit Detective from opening the gates to the Demon World. As Yusuke and his friends settle back to their normal lives after the Dark Tournament, Koenma mulls over a strange case unfolding in the Human World. Kuwabara and the others find Kurama's classmate Kaito when they arrive at the specified location to save Yusuke from the students with strange powers.

One by one, Hiei, Kuwabara and Botan fall victim to the taboo word. Being the last one left, Kurama suggests a deal to settle matters with Kaito. Kurama and the others head deeper into the mansion.

After taking on Yanagisawa's challenge, they meet the mastermind behind the entire ordeal. Genkai and Koenma reveal the frighting state of affairs: Someone is trying to open a tunnel that would connect the Human World and the Demon World. Yusuke and the others meet a mind reader named Murota when they head to Mushiyori City to find who is trying to open the tunnel to the Demon World. Murota is taken to a hospital where the psychic "Doctor" Kamiya resides.

Many collapse as strange insects spread a virus throughout the hospital. Kamiya feels no pain and will not faint for his territory to be deactivated. Yusuke struggles with how he should deal with Kamiya since he is human. As the Demon World hole grows bigger, Kuwabara decides to go off on his own without Yusuke. A new foe called Seaman attacks Kuwabara and his friends. Seaman continues to attack Kuwabara as he tries to save his friends.

New powers awaken inside Kuwabara when he is swallowed up by Seaman's creature. Yusuke and the others learn more about Sensui's past when Koenma visits the Human World to talk to them about the former Spirit Detective. Yusuke struggles to keep up against Sensui's fighting techniques. Sensui tries to separate Yusuke and the others in order to capture Kuwabara.

Yusuke relentlessly chases after the truck that is being used to carry Kuwabara away, but a psychic named Hagiri steps in to challenge him. Hagiri stays undiscovered by Yusuke as he attacks him from afar. A familiar face shows up just as Hagiri takes aim to put an end to Yusuke. Yusuke touches base with the rest of his group.

Genkai sends Yusuke and three others to go to the cave where their enemy awaits. Gamemaster Amanuma brings videogames to life and challenges Yusuke and the others to play them. Finally, Amanuma himself joins the game. Amanuma is being used by Sensui; he will die if he loses the game. Kurama makes a difficult decision in order to save the Human World.

Yusuke's crew finally reaches the place where Sensui and the others are. Kurama stands up to fight against the fifth psychic, Gourmet. The tunnel to the Demon World is nearly complete. While Yusuke faces Sensui by himself, the others get trapped inside the body of Itsuki's demon. Yusuke enters a duel to the death with the overwhelmingly powerful Sensui.

Sensui's personality suddenly changes when Yusuke manages to fight back. Koenma makes up his mind to use the spirit energy he has harnessed in his pacifier over many years to seal the hole to the Demon World. Both Yusuke and Koenma are of no match to Shinobu, Sensui's sacred energy-wielding primary personality.

Yusuke, however, refuses to give up. Kuwabara and the others worry that Yusuke is prepared to die fighting, but they are powerless to do anything while they are still trapped.

Kurama, Hiei and Kuwabara escape, but they are too late. Burning with vengeance, they head straight into the breach to the Demon World. Kuwabara and the others arrive in the Demon World and try to fight against Sensui.

Elite fighters arrive from the Spirit World to eliminate Yusuke. During the fierce battle, Yusuke starts to change. The battle between Yusuke and Sensui comes to an end. After demanding a rematch from Sensui, Yusuke discovers that his opponent is very ill. The Demon World breach is repaired, and peace returns to the Human World.

Yusuke and his friends reflect on the past and move forward to the future. Yusuke feels dissatisfied with his peaceful life. Three visitors arrive from the Demon World to inform Yusuke about his true father, Raizen, but Yusuke finds it hard to trust what they have to say. Yusuke decides to say farewell to Keiko before leaving. Yusuke heads to the Demon World after saying his goodbyes at Genkai's. Upon meeting Raizen in person, Yusuke asks why he interfered against Sensui.

Hiei grows stronger in the six months since arriving in the Demon World. Exhausted from battle, Hiei has recurring dreams of his tragic past. Hiei enters a showdown against Shigure, the demon who surgically implanted his forehead with the Jagan eye and showed him how to fight with a sword.

Kurama and Yomi had worked together as bandits until Yomi was blinded for an unknown reason. Now, Yomi threatens Kurama in order to join him again. General Shachi grows jealous of Kurama for earning Yomi's trust. Genkai and Koenma help Kurama train warriors for a new fighting force. Yusuke visits Raizen to train with him, but hunger has driven his father mad. After their fight, Raizen tells Yusuke why he stopped eating humans.

Yusuke visits Yomi to inform him about his father and to propose his idea of holding a tournament in the Demon World. Yomi tries to turn him down. The Demon World Tournament gets off to a strong start. One by one, Yusuke and Raizen's former rivals pull ahead of the competition in the prelims.

In an ironic twist of fate, Yomi must face his son Shura in the prelims. Having received extensive training, Shura proves to be a capable fighter. The tournament is well underway. Jin and Toya each face their own opponents as they work toward their dream of getting to fight Yusuke again. Kurama transforms into Yoko Kurama during his grueling fight with Shigure, but he turns back into Shuichi Minamino in order to move on from his past.

A fierce battle unfolds between Hiei and Mukuro as both competitors try to break away from their pasts in order to put an end to all the hatred. For those who don't know, Yu Yu Hakusho is set to release two new episodes this year. The special OVAs were ordered to celebrate the show's 25th anniversary this October. As such, the two episodes will be included in the anime's fourth Blu-ray box slated to hit shelves on October 26 in Japan.

The event is held on October 6, and fans will be able to pre-order tickets soon via Crunchyroll. The characters are realistic and diverse, at least compared to most other shonen anime. They can be despicable, lovable, heroic, tragic and everything else, often all at once.
