When was the hummel trumpet concerto written
Common during the Baroque era, the organist would use the trumpet stop to emulate the sound of the trumpet. This was made possible because the organ is a hybrid instrument. It is both a keyboard instrument and wind instrument.
The keys help determine which pipes will open and close. As the air vibrates through different sized pipes, the organist has access to a tremendous number of sounds, pitches, and timbres.
Voluntaries can find their roots in English organ music. They typically contain fanfare-like figures being played over a simpler accompaniment. There are even some instances of call and response between the trumpet voice and the organ accompaniment.
John Stanley was a central contributor to the form, composing dozens of voluntaries throughout his life. This particular selection has been arranged by David Marlatt for trumpet and piano.
The opening movement is thoroughly modern in outlook, and grand in scale, form and orchestration, requiring a sizeable orchestra. The result is a splendid movement for both soloist and orchestra which contrasts the striking opening with a more light-hearted second subject. The Finale, the most light-hearted of the three, conceals a march by Cherubini which at the time of the first performance would have been well known; no longer familiar to us, the joke is today usually lost.
The writing throughout the movement provides the trumpeter with virtuosic trills and flourishes in a variety of keys. This concerto clearly suited Weidinger, for he kept it in his repertoire for many years.
